AMERICAN FESTIVAL OF MICROTONAL MUSIC (AFMM), under the direction of Johnny Reinhard, presents 3 unique 2018 concerts: February 22nd at 3 PM at the College of Staten Island Recital Hall in Staten Island; February 25th at 3 PM at the Museum at Eldridge Street, located at 12 Eldridge Street in Manhattan; and April 13th at 8 PM at LeFrak Concert Hall at Queens College in Queens.  Many of the music compositions are in 128 tuning, a scale pulled from the 8th octave of the overtone series.  There is no admission charge for the concerts.

I.  Thursday afternoon February 22nd at 3 PM in the College of Staten Island Recital Hall features music by living composers.  These include Mark Gustavson’s new work IN-BETWEEN featuring clarinetist Vasko Dukovski.  Peter Thoegersen’s SUMMER IN HELSINKI for bassoonist Johnny Reinhard and violinist Dan Auerbach in 128 tuning makes its American premiere.  Paul Miller performs Georg Friedrich Hass’s SOLO for viola d’amore; and composer and performer Devon Tipp performs AUGURY II for bassoon and pre-recorded electronics.  Bassoonist Johnny Reinhard introduces Anton Rovner’s BALLAD in 128, following its premiere last April in Odessa Philharmonic Hall in the Ukraine.  And composer Angelos Quetzalcoatl plays his TRIBUTE TO VAN HALEN on quartertone guitar.

II.  Sunday afternoon February 25th at 3 PM at the Museum of Eldridge Street (12 Eldridge Street in Manhattan, F train to East Broadway) features living composers.  (Arrive early and catch some of the Chinese New Year Parade!)  Guitarist Angelos Quetzalcoatl plays Leo Brouwer’s ETERNAL SPIRAL.  Violinist Dan Auerbach performs Anton Rovner’s DAWN ON THE HORIZON in 128 for American audiences following its premiere in Helsinki; and imparts Violeta Dinescu’s solo SATYA I.  Bassoonist Johnny Reinhard performs prominent Finnish composers Juhani Tobias Vesikkala’s AVALOKITESVARA in 128, and Juhani Nuorvala’s TOIVO 128 features bassoonist Johnny Reinhard, along with violinists Dan Auerbach and JiaLing Deng, and guitarist Angelos Quetzalcoatl.  Composer Johnny Reinhard introduces his ZELIG MOOD RING for bassoon in 128, and Peter Thoegersen’s DREAMS LIKE LITTLE MOVIES, heard for the first time in the United States, since its premiere in Odessa, Ukraine’s Two Days Two Nights for New Music.

III.  Friday, April 13th at 8 PM at the Aaron Copland School of Music at LeFrak Concert Hall, Queens College, located at the corner of the Long Island Expressway and Kissena Boulevard in Flushing, Queens.  Composer Johnny Reinhard premieres his HEAVEN ON EARTH for 4 harps in 128.  Joel Mandelbaum introduces his THREE DREAM SONGS for 2 violins in 31-tone, with the composer at the Terpstra synthesizer, an AFMM innovation.  Felix del Tredici premieres I AM A FORCE OF NATURE by Peter Thoegersen for solo bass trombone in 128.  Microtonal classics include Ivan Wyschnegradsky’s CHANT DOULOUREUX ET ETUDE performed by pianist Joshua Pierce and violinist Dan Auerbach; and Alois Haba’s DUO FOR TWO VIOLINS in 36 divisions of the octave played by Dan Auerbach and JiaLing Deng.  Svjetlana Bukvich’s HARD RAIN, JOHNNY for bassoonist Johnny Reinhard and pre-recorded electronics, in an idiosyncratic tuning of her own invention, completes the program.
